Anti-Flag Machine
The most recognised symbol of a culture or nation is their flag. With today’s bland celebration of the ‘globally generic’ – what relevance do these ‘symbols’ have? Nations can now be created and destroyed in an instant using the Anti-Flag Machine. This installation toys with the questions: What happens when you separate symbols and contexts, and then reattach meaning by association? Do we create new meaning or no meaning at all? Every few seconds, the Anti-Flag Machine composes a unique flag at random, just one in a potentially infinite series.
This project was commissioned for the Anti-Mascot Project, curated by Estelle Ihasz as part of NextWave 2006 and was exhibited across 2 Melbourne galleries. Flags were flown at Platform2 at Flinders St Station and the installation was installed in the elevator shaft at Brightspace, St Kilda.
