Broken Symmetries @ Damien Minton Gallery

Broken Symmetries included paintings, prints and installation, continuing my investigation of materials, methods and modes of perception. The concept of ‘broken symmetry’ refers to a mathematical model that examines how very symmetrical systems or objects can often spontaneously collapse. Using this idea as inspiration for the development of the images in the show, I sought to build a structural logic in each that would initially woo the eye but eventually crumble under its own weight, through deliberate “errors of making” or “illogical cues” such as illogical light sources. As always, there is an emphasis on process that allows the images to mirror their making; by parsing the works through competing media (collage, photography, sculptural form and paint), the source material becomes tangled in its own history. In the end, the final images teeter on the point of unfolding, collapsing or shape-shifting.
